Mahindra Thar – Things you need to know

Highlights

  • Derived from earlier partnership with Willy’s Jeep
  • One of the most Rugged 4WD proven for rough terrain
  • No radio, no electric window, no digital displays

Thar is the rebranded vehicle whose history dates back to 1940s when Willys Jeep partnered with Mahindra under the later’s license in India. However, the name Mahindra Thar was only bestowed in the year 2010.

Thar is available in three variants; the top-notch four wheel drive CRDe, the two wheel drive DI 2WD and the four wheel drive DI 4WD.

Thar CRDe boosts a 2.5 –litre turbocharged four cylinder diesel engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and a four-wheel drive system that operated in two-wheel drive high range, four-wheel drive high range and four-wheel drive low range. The engine itself is capable of producing 105bHp  power and 247Nm torque.

Thar CRDe engages mechanical locking rear differential and features 27/44 degree approach/ departure angles. Ground clearance stands at 200 mm. Front wheels are equipped with disc brakes and the rear wheels are equipped with drum brakes.

When it comes to suspension, front of Thar has independent front suspension with stabilizer bar and torsion bar while the rear features leaf springs. Ride may be bumpy at lower loads, but the ride quality increases with the increase in load.

As rugged as it is, the interior of the Thar is minimalistic. The dual tone dashboard holds AC button with vents, heater, a wind shield demister and a 12V Power Outlet. The dash has provision for 2-Din Music System. The central console holds cup holders and the two gear levers only. No radio, no digital displays and no electric windows. A seat belt warning sign is all you get in the three-pod instrument cluster.

For safety of the rider and the vehicle, Thar comes with Anti-lock Braking System, engine Immobilizer and Child Safety Lock. And that’s where the list of safety features ends. Safety features is a far cry.

Any fan of ergonomic interior will feel being in a pre-electronic revolution era. Fans of connectivity will definitely be disappointed. However, the rugged off-road performance definitely brings a wow on every rider’s experience.
